4-7-8 Breathing –
- To perform this breathing technique sit in a comfortable position with the back straight.
- Place the tip of the tongue on the tissue just behind the upper front teeth. Keep the tongue there throughout the exercise.
- Breathe out through the mouth.
- Close the mouth and breathe in through the nose for up to 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath counting up to 7 seconds.
- Breathe out through the mouth counting up to 8 seconds.
Repeat these steps three more times. Practice this exercise at least twice a day. The ratio of 4:7:8 is important. One should maintain this ratio throughout the exercise and if necessary, one can count a little faster if the breath can’t be held for the full span.

Diaphragmatic Breathing –
The diaphragm is at the base of the lungs. It is a muscle that plays a key role in breathing. Diaphragm breathing is also known as belly breathing or abdominal breathing.
- Lie on the back on a flat surface, such as the bed, with the knees bent.
- Put one hand on the upper chest and the other on the stomach just below the rib cage.
- Breathe in through the nose. Concentrate on the breathing and draw the breath down to the stomach. The hand on the stomach will rise with the breath. The chest should remain still.
- Exhale slowly, the stomach should fall back to its original position, but the hand on the upper chest should remain still.

- Sit comfortably with the back straight and legs uncrossed. Look slightly upward or close your eyes.
- Place the hands on the upper and lower chest and breathe quietly through the nose.
- Focus on the areas of the body that move with breath and concentrate on the lower chest.
- After a few minutes, let the top hand rest on the lap.
- Slowly relax the muscles in the face, jaw, neck, shoulders, abdomen, hips, and legs.

Alternate Nostril Breathing –
Alternate nostril breathing is a yoga technique.
- Sit in a comfortable position on the floor or chair with the back straight.
- Put the left hand in the lap with the palm facing downwards and resting on the thigh.
- Raise the right hand in front of the face.
- Let the index and middle fingers rest between the eyebrows and actively use the thumb and ring finger to perform this breathing exercise
- Close the eyes and take a deep breath in and out through the nose.
- Use the right thumb to close the right nostril.
- Breathe slowly through the left nostril.
- Close the left nostril with the ring finger. Both nostrils should be held closed, and hold the breath for 4 to 5 seconds.
- Open the right nostril and breathe out slowly through the right nostril. Pause at the end of the exhale for 4 to 5 seconds.
- Now inhale slowly through the right nostril and hold both nostrils closed.
- Open the left nostril and breathe out slowly. Pause briefly at the end of the exhale for 4 to 5 seconds.
- Repeat this breathing technique 5 to 10 times.
